Something Hot

Something New

Sarah Aponte- Abstract artist born in Bronx, NYC 1982. I've been painting since I was 6 yrs old and have found a peace and spiritual place when painting. I hope you enjoy my artwork!

I remember being a little girl and seeing a painting. The painting was like a bright light around me. It whispered to me, drew me in and gave me joy. I began painting at six when everything seemed complicated and confusing as a child. When I painted I felt distant from the world and withthin myself. It gave me strength. Later in life when I had grown and given birth to a child, it allowed me to experience a deep appreciation of my everyday experiences. My emotions began bursting out of me.

Every painting is a piece of me, a situation, a feeling, a pain, joy or confusion. A puzzle I am still trying to put together.I find it hard to express everything I feel inside. My experiences can't be expressed with ordinary words. I use painting as a language. It is shocking and gentle at the same time. It awakens my senses and takes me to a world I want to be in, where I can experience past, present and sometimes see the future. I use color, shapes and different objects to help me express what I want to convey.

When I paint my emotions and experiences can be overwhelming. Sometimes I feel the effect of another person. It's like unwrapping a box and finding different objects inside and trying to make sense out of it. Every moment is discovery.

I paint because I have to. I feel electric and sharp. All the ideas flowing through. I'm one-on-one with the canvas. The white canvas is silent from where I try to awaken the shapes and forms- trying to express what's already there but unseen. My soul is my paintbrush. While creating I feel as if I'm playing in a field of all possibilities with the elements: Earth, Air, Water, Fire, Time, Space. Impulses of my inner self give the elements direction. It's all very spontaneous, fast. The whelling up and flow of life inside moves my arm and hands to unfold the color and shapes on the canvas. And the exhilaration created is part of the process. The joy of the process makes me want to paint again, and it all starts over again.

I use paint because I feel connected to it. The medium chose the artist. My mind is swimming in creative energy and I'm compelled to express that.
