I wish to take the viewer into a world of shapes and colors that identify a certain time of day, and the mood the moment presents. The buildings absorb and reflect light and create shadows that form shapes and work as a framework for the composition. I tend to use roads as a major composition tools to lead the viewer into the painting.
What I was taught and still practice is the method, or technique of overstating and understating objects. By that I mean is, adding stronger color, or adding less color to attain the effect that I am after.
A painting can only be a representation of a subject, and is of itself, a painting. Therefore, I take liberties as I create the compositional framework by adding or leaving out elements, all for the sake of composition.

Dennis Bailey was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio and attended Garfield Hts. High School where he majored in commercial art. Upon graduation he attended The Cooper School of Art in Cleveland. There he was introduced to oil painting by artist/teacher Shirley Alley Campbell. Upon moving to New England in 1993, Dennis studied in numerous oil painting workshops. His instructors include: Alfred C. Chadbourn, Charles Sovek, Edward Carson, Sharon Carson , and Charles Movalli.
Movalli taught with much enthusiasm and greatly influenced Dennis in his decision to pursue his painting career.
Dennis has participated in and has won numerous awards in exhibitions in the Midwest and throughout New England. His most recent major award was The Sam Sargent Memorial Award for Best of Show in the Newburyport Art Association 2000 Fall Juried Show. In 1992 Dennis received an Honorable Mention for The Artists Magazines National Juried Landscape Competition.
