Tattoos, many consider them to be art (I am one of these people) Many do not. Some think of it as a way to express themselves (I am also one of thes people) Others think of it as self mutilation. I want to know what people here think!!!

I think that tattoos are a way to express yourself for the person that has them, and an artform for both the artist and the tattooed. My tattoos (at least the majority of them) have been done by a very close friend. I enjoy having her artwork on my body because of how much I appreciate her art, and how much I love her as a friend. I also dig the whole experience from beginning to end....even the stares from old ladies.

Well I gotta say I love my tattoos, I only have four at the moment. Two of them are celtic pieces, which applies to my heritage, the others are also relatively personal, one is silly but I don't care. :) I do believe they are expression of our individuality and creativity, especially when well done.

I've been wanting a tattoo for years now.. just havent gotten the chance to pay for it or suck it up.. lol... I live in a small town, and there's only one tattoo shop out here thats 25yrs old.. owner looks like a former biker haha. and incase anyone asks, I've always wanted a Phoenix, in memory of a friend, with a single flame around it for another friend. it'd be my first when i do..
haven't found a good free design though..

Tattoo's can be just as beutiful as a masters painting, nothing short of just a different medium. Ive been a fine artist all my life and have always had the desire to learn the art of tattooing. However, there is another side, there are hacks who just color in a heart stencil or something clich'e, Its not a question if tattooing is an art, the question is if the person doing the tattoo can make it into art or a human color book. Tattoos should either mean something and should revolve around the human form, in my opinion anyway.

I direct & curate a fine art gallery and tattoo studio here in Dallas, TX (www.9eyesart.com) and we have two of the finest tattoo artists in the Southwest. Of course, it goes without saying tats are art. Graffiti, too. Both require skill and an almost ritualistic process. good art prevails, bad art prevails. There is no accounting for taste, however, in any sphere. Peace, Kevin

I have five - and I belive they are an art form. When you run out of paper you must create on something right?

I prefer to use canvas, skin will eventually die, and there goes the artwork.
