I was recently contacted by a place staging a show in early March tilted "30 pieces in 60 days".

The general idea is that if I choose to participate, I have 60 days to create 30 pieces for this show. The real limiting factor is the size. Every piece has to be 8 x 10 (I'm sure this is for the photographers participating). Most of my works in my 'warehouse' don't fit the size limitation, so I'd have no pieces to fall back on should I come up short. Less than 30 pieces means you cannot participate at all in the show. I'd also have to factor in drying time for the oil paints to allow for safe handling and transport.

I'm tempted to accept the challenge and go for it...but it's easier to just let it pass...I know I can do it, but would quality suffer?

Any thoughts?

My suggestions are... you can do it! If you can get some Medium from the art store. This will get the Oil to dry faster used the best Medium for you. If you don't have panels 8"X10". cut 30 pieces from a 4'X8' plywood (3/4") to the size you need (from Home Depot...??). Applied some gesso on the surface and create some texture. Now you have a surface to paint on. If you like canvas surface..get some canvas and glue to a tin plywood. Simplify your paintings by making large strokes in your paintings to create the idea across. Make it happen!!! You can do it.

After taking the night and thinking it over, I'm gonna give it a try. As I post the pictures there may be some thematic revisitation in some of the pieces, but I think it will be a fun challenge. The show is March 6th and today is January 6th, I have two months...I'll let you know how it progresses...

You may want to think about doing them in water-based oils. Fantastic pigmentation, fast drying, no thinner required. Only water. Looking fwd to seeing the finished pieces. Keep at it. GAWD, I love a challenge like that!

Well, here we are....it's January 16th...I've been painting my ass off, and I'm halfway through the challenge (15 paintings done)...15 paintings in only 10 days...some of them look rushed, but all in all I'm satisfied with the results...I'm tired and I think I'll take today off...

I Do not think it is so great.I think banging out pieces of art is nonsense,we are not on a game show competing for prizes. You even said it yourself some of them look rushed. Not a good idea in my opinion

There's a difference in "banging out" works and challenging yourself to a new and different level of creativity.  Many competitions and juried selections have deadlines.  If you don't meet said deadlines, you don't have the possibility of being selected.  I recently submitted a piece for a themed competition and guess what - there was a deadline!  They announced it at one point and cut it off at another.  Thus, it was timed.  I had more time than corq did.  But it was timed none the less.  His pieces to date, in my humble opinion, don't look rushed.  He's exploring a new medium, in a new size, and still managing to create things worth a darn.

zganie does make a good point and i see where he's coming from...if anything this 'challenge' is teaching me to be more flexible...sometimes feeling the 'pressure' of a deadline forces one to disconnect and create based on instict...i'm finding i really am a 'trees and mountains' kind of artist and could enjoy doing the same style forever but at the same time, in order to avoid repitition, i'm trying different ideas...overall i'd rate this experience thusfar as rewarding, however with 11 blank canvases left to go, there's alot of work to go and my 'creative mind' is running on fumes...

your art is not about flexibility, its about your vision ,which is what makes it special.Even if its been done before you bring your inner vision to the  piece

I am not putting anyone down here its just my opinion
