nyc enigma
Date: Sep 06 2007, 1:32 am Mood: Confused
just got back from the City. wonderful time. re-energized. inspired. i must say though that sometimes i tend to forget the dangers of nyc (as i experience it when i am there). i am not referring to the physical urban unsafe environment it may present. actually, on the contrary, nyc is probably one of the safest big cities in the country. the attraction that led me there years ago was the dangers that surrounded the different sections. the seedy atmosphere of times square. the shadiness of the lower eastside. the insanity of it all. that is not the truth today. giuliani has transformed it into a touristy "disney world." no more reason to be afraid. Ah, but my reasons for fearing the City stem from within. i emerge a different self. i become vulnerable to the elements that urged me to flee. the social circles, the ambivalence, the dilemma requiring a choice between equally undesirable alternatives. i get lost, cannot see the forest through the woods. gotta get out. and then come back another time.

nyc paradox
Date: Aug 31 2007, 9:55 am Mood: Inspired
simplify. my operative word begins the paradox that is new york city. a simplistic attitude that i have developed, attributable to the complexity of the City, oddly enough. equally as peculiar is the ability to retain anonymity in a sea of a diverse populace; a recluse in a dense people mass; conquering the challenge of composure and equanimity amidst its disquiet climate; to be lulled by the intense energy that emits from the deep recesses of its inner core; to appreciate the natural man-made (oxymoron?) beauty of the City's time-torn urban landscape; the urge to escape, even for just a little while, the involution, only to be compelled to return again and again. i ny! it is home. i have left, albeit geographically, my passion remains. with all of new york city's je ne sais quoi, there, as in the City, will always be my inspiration to pursue my true artistic quests. what can i say...

surrealism...
Date: Aug 26 2007, 4:44 pm Mood: Normal
noun, masc., pure psychic automatism by which it is intended to express, either verbally or in writing, the true function of thought. thought dedicated in the absence of all control exerted by reason, and outside all aesthetic or moral preoccupations. ENCYL. philos. surrealism is based on the belief in the superior reality of certain forms of association heretofore neglected, in the omnipotence of the dream, and in the disinterested play of thought. it leads to the permanent destruction of all other psychic mechanisms and to its substitution for them in the solution of the principal problems of life.

thread
Date: Aug 25 2007, 11:31 am Mood: Normal
"...i was sitting by the window holding your button. i wanted to sew it on your coat but i was out of thread. it was dark and rainy and the leaves were shiny. i decided to go out and gather some up in my skirt for our carpet. i wanted to work on the hand of a soldier folded in prayer but i was out of thread. i remembered that there was a roll of silk in a box somewhere. you had given it to me when we were learning language. we shared words as treasure hunters joyfully uniting to piece together a tremendous stroke of luck. it was already there to be found. i unwound the bolt and felt a certain vibe, a word. the word was the missing name of god. the word was written in your percussive blood." -patti smith

where have all the artists gone?
Date: Aug 22 2007, 5:43 pm Mood: Normal
"...what often happens with visionaries - they think and see, begin, beget, and believe. by seizing the opportunity, by taking the big risk that is actually a test of merit in disguise. they end up creating new neighborhoods, sparking new movements in the arts, spawning new industries - because they change the way we perceive things. here's to 723.
